Mold can grow in many environments, and sadly for some, that includes the inside of vehicles. Under the right conditions, mold can flourish. When trash is left in a vehicle, a moisture leak occurs, or a vehicle is stored in a humid climate, it’s not uncommon for mold to begin to grow.
Not only does mold smell terrible, but it damages the surfaces it occupies, and can even be hazardous to human health. If a driver suspects they have a mold infestation within their vehicle, it’s important that they seek the services of a professional automotive detailer right away to remove the substance and prevent its spread.
If you’re living in Ho Chi Minh City, you know how humidity this weather is. The moist yet warm interior of a neglected car perfectly mimics the rainforests that mold and fungus call their home.
The first to know is that mold propagates through air. So once it starts spreading, it is really difficult to slow its spread. And there are several ways in which mold can find its way to your car’s interior, such as:
In all of these situations, your car interior is subjected to excessive moisture. And these microscopic mold spores will form first. And later they will quickly spread to all parts of your interior.
Mold doesn’t announce its presence with a neon sign, but it does leave behind a trail of subtle clues. One unmistakable sign is the musty odor that wafts through your car as you open the door. Other indicators include visible mold growth on surfaces. You can usually find it in hidden nooks and crannies. And the onset of allergy symptoms like sneezing or coughing when you step inside.
There are specific signs of mold growth in your car:
If you suspect mold growth in your car, it’s essential to address it promptly. Or you can ask us to check. We are here in An Phu, Quan 2 (Ho Chi Minnh City).
Why you need to be urgent? Because mold can be harmful to your health and may damage your vehicle’s interior over time.
If you have some extra time on your hands, you can try and remove the mold by yourself. Start the mold removal process by giving the interior a good vacuum. Make sure that you cover all areas of the interior, including the seats, floor mats, doors, and the center console. Move the seats all the way backward and forward to remove all the debris beneath them. Don’t forget to vacuum inside the cupholders as well.
Once the vacuum process has been completed, you can move on to tackling each of the mold stains. As we mentioned earlier, there are several household products you can use for this. Some of the most effective ones include:
First, ensure that you have the right supplies to clean mold in your car. This can include:
Begin by opening all the doors and windows of your car to ensure proper ventilation. This helps reduce exposure to mold spores. We recommend using a fan to make more air ventilation.
You should take out any items that have visible mold, such as seat cushions, floor mats and removable upholstery. Bag these items in plastic trash bags and dispose of them properly.
Use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter to carefully vacuum all interior surfaces, including carpets, upholstery and the dashboard. This will remove loose mold spores and make it easier to clean off the mold in your car. A HEPA vacuum is a good tool to traps mold spores. And prevents recontamination.
Why?
HEPA stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air. HEPA filters are designed to capture 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns—which includes most mold spores, bacteria, dust mites, and allergens.
In contrast, a HEPA vacuum locks spores in, preventing them from being redistributed into your vehicle’s cabin.
Mix a natural cleaning solution by combining equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray this solution on affected areas, letting it sit for 10–15 minutes to loosen the mold further. Alternatively, you can also create a mixture of water and color-safe bleach, but before using it on your upholstery, try it on a hidden spot to make sure it won’t leave stains.
Gently scrub the affected areas with a soft-bristle brush, microfiber cloth or sponge. Ensure you reach into crevices and seams. Wipe down all surfaces with clean water to rinse away cleaning solution residues.
Leave your car in direct sunlight with doors and windows open to air it out and help eliminate the mold in your car. You can use an air dryer to speed up the drying process.
Identify and fix the source of moisture that led to mold growth in the first place, such as leaks, spills or excessive humidity. Consider using moisture-absorbing products like desiccant bags or a dehumidifier in your car to maintain low humidity levels.
Regularly clean and maintain your car’s interior to prevent future mold growth.
Reinspect your car’s interior after a few days to ensure mold hasn’t returned.
If it has, repeat the cleaning process and consider consulting a professional if the problem persists.

OUR STANDARD MOLD REMEDIATION INCLUDES:
Driving a moldy car on a regular basis isn’t something anyone should be exposed to. Interior mold growing in your vehicle may be the cause of irritation to your eyes & respiratory system, incite allergic reaction, infection, and further health complications.
We advise anyone with asthma or a history of asthma attacks in moldy environments to not drive vehicle with mold to or from our location for mold remediation. Mold sensitivity or even the slightest agitation of spores could trigger an asthma attack, putting the driver, passengers, and other road-goers at risk.
We are well versed in a wide variety of mold removal & remediation techniques. Utilizing a combination of atmospheric testing, labor-intensive deep cleaning & detoxification measures, we can kill the mold in your car with certainty. Additionally, we can facilitate the type of preventative care & material treatment your vehicle needs to keep it completely mold-free for years to come.
If your car’s interior smells damp or “dewy,” chances are mildew & mold may already be growing within the fabrics, carpets, or seat foam. To check for mold, remove all the interior components you can like floor mats or seat covers, and look for any signs of growth, discoloration, or wetness. If you would like a second opinion, we can schedule you for a leak-down test and perform a moisture scan of your interior and really get to root of the mold problem before removal & remediation takes place.
Mold can grow almost anywhere in a vehicle interior. We commonly see mold on floorboard carpets, headliners, seat belts, seats, headrests, and even growing in the trunk or rear hatch. If an area of the vehicle is susceptible to moisture, leaking, or collecting standing water, chances are mold will flourish.
In short, car mold is due largely to trapped moisture, stagnant air and organic matter. If your vehicle is showing signs of mold growth, chances are there may be a leaky seal or point of entry for water and environmental contaminates to find their way in. If you haven’t identified the source of the original moisture, there may be a leak in your seals or sunroof somewhere. We suggest having a leak down test performed prior to scheduling your appointment for remediation.
Car mold isn’t a life & death issue, but it can pose a risk to you or your passenger’s health if exposure to a moldy vehicle is prolonged. Beyond that, it’s unsightly — it can discolor, stain, and compromise your fabrics, resulting in irreversible damage where the only solution is to completely replace interior components of the vehicle.
Just because surface mold isn’t visible doesn’t mean your vehicle is mold free. If the musty, mildew smell is present in your interior, chances are there’s mold hiding underneath carpet padding or growing in your headliner. It might be worth considering a Smoker’s Remedy with OZONE or similar deodorization procedure to see if the smell subsides. Alternatively, schedule a mold removal & remediation consultation at your earliest convenience.
Prior to our work taking place, we insist our customers identify the source of moisture and address the point of entry if it had to do with a leak on your vehicle. This service is available to be done by most glass repair shops in the area to help you identify and fix any necessary seals. We often see clogged sunroof drains which moisture will backup and enter the car at the footwells of the front seats as well as windshield replacements gone bad or even door and window seals which have failed. In rare instances, we have seen vehicles without a leak, that have been stored for months without being driven, which can develop mold. This generally results in pine needle or organic matter clogging necessary drains or seals from storage outside. Once you have identified and fixed the moisture problem, we would be happy to complete our mold remediation process on your vehicle.
