What does a car scratch that PPF can cover look like?

Many people call any types of damages on car “car scratches”. Yes, we agreed with this conclusion. We are not an automotive technician, right? So, take it easy.

  • We can sort these damages based on the depth. The deeper it is, the more damage you have.
  • We also can sort these damages based on the width. The wider it is, the more materials you need to fill in.

And Paint Protection Film is not a magical solution. It’s born to cover up light scratches only. So, if you have a superficial scratch on a car, you have to go to a local body shop.

How can you see scratches on a car?

Just get into some basic principle on how can you see scratches on a car.

  • You can see deep scratches easily than light scratches;
  • And you can see wider scratches easier than micro, thin scratches;

Darker colored vehicles, particularly those with a pristine black finish, tend to show swirl marks more prominently. This is because the darker the surface, the more obvious any disruption in its uniform reflection of light becomes.

On the other hand, light-colored vehicles, such as whites or silvers, can mask swirl marks more effectively. This is due to their increased light reflection, which helps to hide minor imperfections.

Auto Detailing has some different types of approaches as follows:

  1. Filling up the holes or the scratches.
  2. Making sharp edges into round edges.
  3. Remove scratches until the deepest angle.

What is a deep scratch on a black car?

The deep scratch is a scratch that dug all the way through the clear coat layer. And it can expose the Prime. It can be quite stressful to look at as the paint job appears to be slightly ruined. Also, there is a slight chance that rust will occur on the affected portion. That is why immediate repair is advised to prevent that from happening.

What you can see is that technicians need to fill up the scratches and re-paint it. So, PPF will not cover up to the deep scratches.

How deep is my car scratch?

The first step to know a car scratch is to identify the type of scratch you have. To do this, you can use your fingernail to catch the scratch.

  • If your fingernail doesn’t catch the scratch, it’s a clear coat scratch.
  • However, if your fingernail does catch the scratch, it’s either a primer-level or deep-paint scratch.

Another way is to look at the color of the exposed metal.

  • If the exposed metal is silver or gray, it’s a primer-level scratch.
  •  In case the exposed metal is brown or rusty, it’s a deep-paint scratch.

How to cover up scratches properly with PPF?

Step 1: Paint Decontamination

Pressure washer alone is not good enough. You need to clean all industrial fallout and hard stuff baked on paint.

You have to use compound to remove scratches from the clear coat. And it means that you remove a car scratch and the paint layer at the same time.

So, the more aggressive the buffer is, the deeper it can cut. If it goes past the clear coat then it’s not good. You need to re-paint then add clear coat again. Because we will install PPF later, we don’t need to use the aggressive compound. Only light polish that can make surface more reflective is fine.

These treatments can effectively remove swirl marks and restore the paint to its original luster.

PPF serves as an invisible barrier that protects against rock chips, minor abrasions, bird droppings, and even acid rain. By acting as a first line of defense, it effectively reduces the risk of damaging your paint.

And this protective layer can cover all micro scratches caused by car washes. However, deep scratches like rock chips and scratches catch by fingernail is still visible.
